About UNF
2006
UNITEDNOTIONS film was established in 2006 by independent filmmakers Violeta Ayala and Dan Fallshaw with the motto of challenging the status quo.
Today, UNf is working against a TECHNO AUTHORITARIAN FUTURE. We believe in using technology as a tool to democratize storytelling.
Dan and Violeta first began working together after travelling to Mauritania in 2005 where they made Between the Oil and the Deep Blue Sea, an investigative documentary about corruption in the international oil industry.
In 2006, they went to the Sahara desert and and began making Stolen, a feature film uncovering slavery in a UN-monitored refugee camp.
Sparking worldwide controversy when it premiered at the Sydney Film Festival 2009, Stolen went on to screen in 80 festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, winning sixteen awards and airing on PBS.
In 2015, they made The Bolivian Case, a film questioning the media’s racism in Norway, that premiered as a Special Presentation at Hot Docs. It was nominated for Premios Platino and Fenix and distributed by Ibermedia across Latin America to an audience of 625 million. We also joined forces with our friend and filmmaker Redelia Shaw.
In 2017, along with the team of Andrea, Fernando and Andres; Violeta and Dan trekked over the Bolivian Andes, documenting a protest by people with disabilities fighting for their rights.
The resulting short film The Fight was published by The Guardian, won the Doc Dispatch Award at Sheffield Doc Fest, a Walkley Award in Australia, Best Short at the International Human Rights Festival in Sucre, was nominated for the IDA Awards and was a Rory Peck Sony Impact Award finalist.
In 2017, Cocaine Prison, shot in a Bolivian jail over four years, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to critical acclaim and won the Audience Award at Cinelatino in Toulouse 2018. Cocaine Prison opened in cinemas across France, aired on PBS WORLD Channel across the US, and was picked up by Amazon for their Prime streaming service.
In 2021, Prison X - The Devil and the Sun, the first episode of our digitally hand-made VR series, premiered at Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews.
Following on from Sundance, UNF launched a co-creators studio KOA.xyz focused on building the Metaverse including 3D art, 3D character creation, AR/VR/XR and AI.
